Aftercare Is Neurobiology

Aftercare is sometimes described as the “nice” part at the end — a blanket, some water, a few kind words. It’s all of that, but it’s also neurobiology. Intense experiences flood the body with stress and bonding chemistry; when the scene ends, those systems need time and support to return to baseline.

Without a deliberate landing, people can experience a crash in the hours or days that follow — low mood, irritability, or a sense of disconnection (often called “drop”). Aftercare is how you help each other’s nervous systems down-regulate: warmth, hydration, reassurance, and a plan for the next day.

Good aftercare is negotiated in advance, just like the scene itself. Ask what someone needs to feel safe and cared for afterward — and remember that tops need aftercare too.
